What is Linux ? | Features of Linux and it's advantage

As you all know, today is the time of technological revolution. Every day new gadgets are coming up on the market. It has affected our way of life. People are using gadgets for communication and employment. We can not even tell you that electronic gadgets have given rise to a new revolution and we have become acquainted with many new things. These gadgets are basically like mini computers in which some special programs i.e. a set of instructions are put in how the device will work and the operating system is used in the gadgets to make these programs work. From smartphones to cars, from supercomputers to home appliances, from home desktops to database servers, operating systems are everywhere. There are many operating systems available in the digital world such as Android, I.O.S, Windows, etc. Apart from all these operating systems, there is one more operating system which is used in most of the electronic gadgets and the name of that OS is Linux OS It is not a Operating System it is a kernel.  We don't know about it, but we use it all the time. Linux has been around for over 30 years. It first came to us in the mid-1990s and since then, due to its usefulness, this price has been ruling in all devices and will continue to do so. Most people don't know much about the Linux operating system. So today we are writing this content in which you will be given all the information related to Linux.

What is Linux?

So first of all we will know what is Linux. Like Windows I.O.S and Mac operating systems, Linux is also one operating system. The operating system uses one computer and there is one interface between the computer hardware in which the user can easily interact with the computer. An operating system is a collection of software that manages computer hardware resources and provides common services for computer programs. Software cannot work without an operating system. Linux is the most popular and multi-operating system that manages all the hardware resources connected to your desktop and laptop. Linux is a very popular version of the Unix operating system. It is one free and open-source software which means one Linux developer can be modified for commercial and personal use for free on the Internet. The Linux operating system was originally developed for personal computers, but later this operating system was used in many such platforms such as mobile, smart TV, gaming consoles, and even vehicles. Linux is an operating system similar to Unix and is most commonly used in servers and computer system devices.

In which year and who developed Linux kernel?

Now we know who created Linux and when. The Linux operating system was developed by Linus Torvalds in 1991 and released under the General Public License GPL by AT & T's Laboratories. When Linus was a student at the University of Helsinki, he was using an operating system called Minix, the 1st version of the Unix operating system. When Linus and some users found that making some changes to Minix could make it work even better, they requested its creator, Andrew Tanenbaum, to make modifications and improvements to Minix, saying that these changes were not necessary and they did not make changes to it. That's when Linus decided to create its operating system that would take into account user comments and suggestions for improvements. Linus was a student of C programming language, so he started writing code in C programming language. About 95% of Linux's code was written in C programming language and the rest of the code they written in Assembly language and other languages. After formulating the coding, Linus named the operating system Linux, combining its first name and the name of Unix. Linux was designed to be compatible with Unix, so much of the functionality resembles Unix. Linux and Unix are similar in many ways, but Unix is not free while Linux is available for free. In addition, Linux is a very reliable operating system for computers because it provides good security features that allow the user's files and data to be kept in encrypted form, such as password protection and controlled access.

How many components are in Linux Kernel?

Now we will know how many components are there in Linux. The three main components of the Linux operating system are Hardware, Kernel, Shell, and System Utility. What is their function and why is it important for Linux?  First of all, let's talk about hardware. The first component is the hardware in which peripheral devices such as hard disk drives and C.P.U together form the hardware layer for the Linux operating system. A kernel is the main part of Linux. It is responsible for all the major activities of this operating system. It directly interacts with the internal hardware. The kernel provides services to hide the lower-level details of the hardware in the system or application program. Now let's talk about the shell. The shell has one interface between the user and the kernel. This hides the complexity of the kernel's functions from the user. It accepts the user's commands and also takes action on it. System Utility The system utility provides services to the user to use functions similar to those of the operating system. Individual and special functions can be used only through the system utility.

Best features of Linux Kernel

The Linux operating system is much better than other operating systems and has many features. But here are a few things you should know about them.

  •  An open-source operating system that is available free to use on the Internet, so that any user or developer can make changes to it according to their own. Through this, we can make it better by increasing the functionality of this OS.

  • Portability is one of the main features of the Linux operating system that made Linux so popular among its users. However, portability does not mean that this system is small in file size and can be moved to a USB, CD, or memory card. No, instead here portability means that the Linux operating system and its applications can work on different types of hardware in the same way. The Linux kernel and application programs rarely support their installation even on such low hardware configurations that you can even breathe life into your old computer.

  • Linux is a multi-user and multi-programming operating system in which one with more than one user can access and use the hardware of the computer.

  • The feature of multi-tasking is also available in Linux so that one user can run more than one program task or software at the same time.

  • Finally, security is a very important part of any operating system. For organizations or users who are using the system for their confidential functions. Linux provides many security concepts to its users to protect their data and systems from unauthorized access. It is a completely trouble-free operating system and does not present any problems like viruses or malware that slow down the speed of your computer.

Where Linux are mostly use?

Thousands of companies and governments around the world are using Linux OS because of its affordability, low cost, and time and money. Companies like Google, Amazon, and Facebook use Linux to protect their servers because it is a highly reliable and stable operating system. Linux is used not only in personal computers, laptops, and grooming books but also in small gadgets such as P.D.A., mobile phones, smartwatches, digital storage devices, cameras, etc. Linux is used in many electronic devices such as Dell laptops, Google Android phones, HP laptops, Lenovo laptops, Motorola phones, Sony Bravia TV, Sony Reader, etc.  Linux is the most famous and most used open-source operating system, which does not have to pay any fee to use it and can also be used for your business by making changes according to your choice.
